After 4 desperate years, fans can rejoice as Karnivool have finally dropped a new single, ‘Drone’.
The track has been “lifted from the larger body of work that can finally be seen on horizon” - I'm certain that this means this is the first single off an upcoming album - twelve long years since 2013's Asymmetry.

“'Drone' is the sound of Karnivool entering a new era — a slow-cooked journey forged in the studio’s heat, where every note was tested and tempered. This track hums with the weight of vast Western Australian deserts, anchored by colossal rock riffs that could only come from our home. It’s both a reflection and a rebirth,” says Karnivool.
Fans will find that ‘Drone’ reminds them more of the band's Sound Awake era. While they always had an atmosphere to their sound, 'drone' has the drive from Sound Awake, without too heavy a bite, but isn't as relaxed as something like 'Eidolon' off Asymmetry. It is still fresh and new, while capturing the karnivool flair everyone loves.
‘Drone’s slow intro slips you into a gentle sway, a slow build of tension through Ian Kenny’s vocals before everything rises together into a catchy hook (something along the lines of “I want to stare at the sun until it burns out”), followed by a classic progressive rock build. It embraces the gritty yet laid back guitar riffs and drumming from Sound Awake. Bass rich as always, while Kenny’s sits towards the top end of their register.
‘Drone’ was produced by Forrester Savell, who worked with Karnivool on Themata and Sound Awake, as well as their ‘All It Takes’ single from 2021. His previous time with the band and history working with progressive music (Caligula’s Horse, Dead Letter Circus, etc) will be an asset to the new era.
Whether you’re chasing the nostalgia Hit of late 2000s Karnivool, or hanging on for any drop of new material, you will love ‘Drone’.
