Refreshed, explosive, and powerful Grizzlyshark’s latest track, ‘Desire’ (released March 6th), brings a burning and bright energy that will be sure to impress fans of the band.

Brisbane's emo hardcore band Grizzlyshark’s exciting new line up has delivered a track full of edge, grit, and a tinge of playful energy that keeps the songs momentum pumping throughout.

It can be difficult for a band to come back swinging after a series of member changes but Grizzlyshark have managed it, and managed it well. With the combined fresh blood of Jackson Barnes on guitar, Sean Puxty on drums, and Nik Slattery on bass, Grizzlyshark has reignited the fire with ‘Desire’.

An explosive opening, fast and ferocious, is quickly soothed by the vibrant vocals of Andrew Taylor, which have a perfectly nu-metal drawl. Taylor’s vocals throughout are delicious, they feel raw and honest, his screams give listeners permission to scream along. They’re not perfectly polished but full of grit, vigour, and passion. Exactly what the track needs.

There’s a desperation to the guitars of Joey McClennan and Jackson Barnes, quick, and scatter-gun, in a way that feels almost frantic during the verses which then break out into fuller, longer chords as the chorus sweeps through like a cool breeze.

Where some songs can be bogged down by such frequent pace changes Grizzlyshark manages to maintain the momentum of the song skillfully. The breakdown in the middle of the track, as the song slows right down, feels perfectly timed. It’s easy to imagine a pit opening up, a circle beginning to form, a swirl of mess and mayhem, like the eye of the storm before the song kicks back into gear.

Particularly enjoyable was a brief moment in which the guitars seem to sound alone, they have an ethereal quality, scattered and shaking, bringing forward a feeling not unlike a zap to the brain leaving you feeling discombobulated in the best way.

It sounds like a shock grenade might feel, thrown directly into the centre of the song and blasting all who listen in every direction, it works brilliantly. The bass and drum combo reemerge and bring the song back on track, adding the weight and grit and reality, the ground under your feet, and sends the song driving forward once more.

‘Desire’ is a track that feels like a soaring rage, like pushing through peak hour foot-traffic in the train station, where you get brief pockets of disconcerting solitude amongst the chaos. It’s an excellent return for an excellent band that is Grizzlyshark.
