If you have been craving something that sits right in the middle of emo ache and rock grit, Canadian trio Second Harbour just delivered exactly that. Their new single Mourning Dove is out now, and it is one of those tracks you put on expecting a moody moment, only to realise halfway through that you have accidentally wandered into an emotional demolition zone.

Second Harbour, now proudly flying the SharpTone Records flag, are gearing up for their new EP Coalesce which lands on December 12. Mourning Dove is our first real taste of what they have been cooking. The song cuts in with this tight, angular energy that feels anxious in the best way. Then the vocals slide in and suddenly you are nine feelings deep without even trying.

The band shot the music video themselves in an abandoned house which feels very fitting, because the track sounds like something you would scream into the dust of a forgotten room. Watching them smash through the performance with nothing but their instruments and a lot of emotional damage makes the whole thing hit even harder.

Frontman Xavier Morency has already admitted that these are the most painful lyrics he has ever written, and it shows. There is a rawness here that is rare, the kind of writing that feels sharp enough to leave a mark. He crafted the lyrics so they can be read differently than they are heard, which gives the track that extra layer of depth that emo fans will obsess over.

If Mourning Dove is the warning shot, Coalesce is shaping up to be something huge. Keep an eye on this band because they are clearly building something special.
