American post hardcore supergroup Fiddlehead have come together once more to bring us the emotionally charged 3 track ep "baby I'll change". the first new material from the band since 2023's " death is nothing to us".
the ep is a product of catharsis and healing, as it was written in the wake of the loss of vocalist pat Flynn's mother, when guitarist Alex Henery and bassist Nick hinsch came to visit him to check in.
“We went to Pat’s house just to support him in a dark time and then we ended up writing music,” says Henery. “It came out of a really good place, of us just wanting to write music together in that moment, and that freed us up to experiment.”
the first song "the dogs" follows the story of flynn grappling the loss of his parents and how his friends support in that time made all the difference., singing about the love and appreciation he has for them all specifically in the second verse, mentioning his band mates by name and commending them for being there in his time of need. the song showcases what fiddlehead do best, conveying emotions with intention. fun and upbeat to start, and hard hitting in all the right places, stripping back where it needs to to let the vocals and subsequently, the emotion behind the lyrics, shine through.
"porchlight" is super fun and energetic, the type of song you could imagine yourself jumping around to at a show with friends. full of fun riffs, catchy melodies, and dynamic drum fills this one is guaranteed to be a fan favourite.
The final track "baby I'll change" is one of fiddleheads most cathartic to date.
a tragic anecdote about addiction, the motif "baby I'll change" repeats throughout the song, with the preceding statements afterwards becoming less and less certain, until eventually "baby I'll change" becomes " remember my name." paired with anthemic instrumentals, the title track is sure to be a mainstay on any fiddlehead setlist in the future.
it serves as a beautiful but heartbreaking tribute to their late friend jimmy flynn who was known to utter the saying " baby I'll change" after getting too drunk at parties. it also features a voicemail from him at the end.
“He was the guy who made the Boston scene happen, and everyone you talked to just loved the guy, but we all basically watched him drink himself to death over the last 10 years of his life."
In my life, I’ve been surrounded by addiction, and a lot of hopeful people making big promises and seeing other versions of themselves. That, to me, is the greatest heartache of my life. It’s not seeing people fail, it’s seeing people desperately try to not fail.” - pat flynn

from the heavy lyrics to the hard hitting instrumentals, "baby I'll change" is a liberating love letter to grief and loss, told in the powerful , honest way that fiddlehead and pat flynn do best. you can listen to the EP wherever you like to listen to music.
