Your favourite German post-black-metal gone post-gaze-alt-rock band is back with an exciting new single, ‘DAISIES’. hAPPY NEW YEAR TO US. Lantlôs has been kicking around the back of the metal scene since 2005, and drastically turned away from its post black metal roots in 2014 with their fourth album MELTING SUN. ‘DAISIES’ is the first we’ve heard of them since 2021’s WILDHUND and single ‘LOWBREATHHIFELLOWLIFEHIHOPES’.

WILDHUND and MELTING SUN ditched black metal vocals with the departure of Neige (Alcest), adopting a whole new shoegaze/ post rock outfit. As someone who absolutely ran WILDHUND ragged in 2021 and 2022, ‘DAISIES’ makes me really excited. It has a very clear tonal change compared to their last two albums, taking on an almost triumphant vibe, which I think will mark another clear transition of their sound. While Lantlôs play things quite close to their chest, I personally feel that their music making has a lot of intention, rather than relying on their tried and true formulas, every album has its own feeling and distinct features to set them apart.

"Daisies is a song about a sunny day, about listening to your music on a Discman, teenage 90s nostalgia, skate mags, emo and meeting your valentine." Lantlôs' instagram

The guitar has a sharper tone and far more attack coming into the intro, pushing it back into a more metal sound. The pinch harmonics in the intro immediately take you back to the sounds of WILDHUND, giving it an otherworldly glow. MARKUS SIEGENHORT’s vocals are what you’d come to know and love from Lantlôs, and sit very directly on top of the mix. The double tracking of vocals or chorus is present for most of the track, and for particular lines it is dropped, which breaks a more typical formula (multiple vocal tracks for specific lines, and solo for most).

The lyrics themselves aren’t particularly catchy (though I will be singing along in no time), the guitar riffs are addictive. They’re nothing crazy. the chug and intention is something you can easily bounce along to. The ‘DAISIES’ is their shortest track to date, but they still manage to squeeze in a solo across the bridge.

As with all Lantlôs releases, the drums are fucking CLEAN. They don’t cut through the mix particularly deep, but they compliment the guitars so well that they don’t need to. The drum fills and beats in the air between riffs just really pull it all together for me.

I love this band, and I really want you to go listen to ‘DAISIES’. I truly believe that Lantlôs is underappreciated and would love to see some more support for them. However, I have some options if it doesn’t quite tickle your fancy. Listen to ‘MELTING SUN I: AZURE CHIMES’ if you want something dreamier and drenched in sound, and ‘PULSE/SURREAL’ if you want to dip your toes into that black metal goodness. Just please go listen to this band.
