Hailing from Canberra, metalcore newcomers Wyndfall are back with the release of their debut EP “The Void Between”.

Delving into familiar themes of the genre like heartbreak, loneliness and pain, “The Void Between” delicately walks the line between "classic metalcore emotion" and something more visceral and meaningful.

The EP opens with “Butterflies”, a heartwrenching track that perfectly balances brutal cathartic rage with melancholic heartbreak. Tortured vocals belt pained lyrics like "can we start again, because I don't want to stay here if it's just a wicked game". Being Wyndfall’s debut single, this track really highlights all of the qualities that set the quartet apart in the scene, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of the EP.

Right from the first chord, “Isolate” takes the crushing brutality of “Butterflies” and amplifies it. Dealing with themes of loneliness and hopelessness, this track is enhanced by unfettered raw vocals delivering lyrics like “I’ve lost my voice but I scream in my mind”.

“Enervated” flows perfectly onwards from “Isolate”, with an immediate sonic onslaught which shifts into a passionate melodic chorus. This track uses whispers of industrial elements to enhance the mood of disassociation which effectively sets the overall atmosphere.

The tone shifts slightly with “Awake”, as clean melodic vocals lull listeners to an intensely emotionally-charged chorus. Vocally, this track was the standout for me, perfectly balancing melodic catharsis with aching gutturals to create an anthemic chorus. Thematically, this track is a point of reckoning in the EP with repetition of the lines “I won’t be going under, I’ve come too far to fall”, almost like a self-affirmation.

“The Void Between” is concluded by “Let me in”, a track that opens gently and softly carries the tone from the previous tracks into a dynamic and forceful final song. Heavy, reflective and crushing, this song perfectly wraps up the EP both sonically and thematically.

In its entirety, “The Void Between” is a testament to Wyndfall’s ability to convey heavy emotion through their music in a way that is powerfully evocative. Each track stands on its own as being deeply impactful and hard-hitting, not only through the band’s attention to production details, but also through the rawness and vulnerability in each song. By exposing their hearts, Wyndfall have created a debut EP that is truly something special. I can’t wait to see what else they will release in the future!

Wyndfall will be hosting an EP launch party for “The Void Between” on October 18th alongside Sprawler and Shadow Talk at Abyss Bar (Belconnen, ACT)! Tickets are available by clicking the link here.
