hailing from Adelaide, South Australia. 5 piece group Sorrowstate just dropped their haunting new track 'my own grave' and for all my silent hill and doom fans. I think you're gonna dig this one.

'my own grave' starts with a haunting isolated guitar, building this scary tension for whats about to come.

a sudden doom inspired switch with a heavy, distorted and almost dirty sound with vocalist shane burford blessing us with his beautiful clean vocals with a familiar poem. remember room 206? wood side apartments? that damn safe? right 13, left 7, right 11. we revisit the iconic silent hill 2 poem.

"Right where the rooftops pierce through the night

Left are homebound footprints with no owner in sight

But has he found home, oh, please pray tell

Or a river of memories leading right to his hell"

reading through the lyrics, this song is heavy on the heart. i spoke with shane to dissect the meaning of this song.

I took it in the way of struggling with my internal mental health, and how I have felt list within myself for quite some time. Constantly feeling lost and like I have no real place within myself to call a home, tying it to a breakup I went though where I had lost everything I had built. - shane burford, vocalist

you can hear the pain, trauma and complete exhaustion in his voice which i appreciate, not in a weird way. i resonate with it. even in my position or anybody in any position. i can see this resonating with a lot of people. no matter what perspective you put it in, 'my own grave' is going to be a crowd favourite for sure! you best believe i will be shouting the chorus with my full chest at their shows. which i'm hoping is soon!

chorus

'i've been walking in circles around my own grave,

Begging for release from the thoughts I can’t save.

I’m slipping through the cracks of a mind gone wrong,

Screaming for a place where I might belong.

the band melting their talent together into this deep, dark, distressing sound was done perfectly. it's giving doom, dirt, grit and rage. these boys are proving that that aussie metal is taking over. the lyrics, the inspirations, the fun gamer easter eggs. it the perfect blend that i know alot of us feast on. sorrowstate taks inspo from bands like vctms and sworn in and i couldnt agree more.

while on the topic of mental health, i'd like to take this opportunity to share some helpful resources you can reach out to. there is help available.

lifeline - 13 11 14

beyond blue 1300 22 4636

suicide call back service - 1300 659 467

13yarn - 13 92 76

don't forget to check in on your mates, your family. ask if they're okay and listen. you might just save a life.

the final chorus and outro is where the real pain hits. it feels like trying to crawl yourself out of this void that nobody else can see but you. you're screaming for help, gasping for air. wishing somebody will hear you and pull you out. you feel so close but it's not enough.

But the more I search, the more I fade—

I am the ghost that I became.

I’m falling through myself with every breath I take—

Tell me…

Tell me how much more I can break.

-

Where do I run when my mind is the hunter

Where do I hide when my thoughts drag me under.

My mind grows cloudy as I reach the end

Every step I take feels like I’m walking off the edge again.

Right where the rooftops pierce through the night…

Left are homebound footprints with no owner in sight

That’s where I lost him…

That’s where I lost me.

it hurts but listening to this song whilst reading through the lyrics, it's like a soft glow sit's behind it. the warm feeling of knowing that songs like this actually heals, it makes you see that you're not alone. it puts your thoughts into words and it's a way to express yourself and your emotions. sorrowstate has done it perfectly with 'my own grave'.

music is healing.

this track is by far my favourite release from sorrowstate. they're teasing a future ep (keen as beans) with one more single on the way. i could not be more excited to see whats next from these guys.
