This week we caught up with Kalani, vocalist of brisbane based deathcore band Roronoah to chat band history, writing processes and future music and tour information. Keep an eye out for my reviews of roronoah's performance at volcanic brewing in Toowoomba and upcoming EP drop.

ree

how did you choose the name “Roronoah” for the band?

Roronoah was a name that came about as a homage to both One Piece and a French pirate from like 500 years ago. There was a lot of discourse before we settled on that name, too many titles that'll never see the light of day.

How long have you been a band?

We have been writing since October 2023 and performing/releasing music since June/july 2024

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

I think if you spoke to each of us you'd find that we all have different inspirations personally but as a whole we tend to draw from your deathcore legends like Slaughter, fit for an autopsy, lorna shore and shadow of intent. Vocally I tend to draw from white chapel and Chelsea Grin.

ree

Does the EP follow an overarching concept or are all four songs entirely individual?

So the EP is very much a themed idea around Abuse, whether it be physical, verbal or abuse of power. It's about pure hurt

What does Roronoah’s music writing process look like?

The writing process usually starts with Josh and Ryan for guitars and then transfers over to me for vocals then we get Jude and Corie to add in their drums and bass and do any fine tuning for the parts that may have already been written for them. We really try to keep the process as evenly split between us so that everyone can hear our authentic selves in the music

Which was the hardest song on the EP to write, and which was the easiest, and why?

I think for sure Tyrant theory has ended up being the song that took the longest to write and is by far the hardest for the rest of the boys to play. Vocally though hush really kicks my ass

ree

Easiest song in my opinion is You Love It although I reckon the boys have differing opinions. I wrote the lyrics in mind to give me a break from screaming my lungs out when we play live

If you could have one Australian musician/band feature on a song of yours, who would it be?

I think for a feature Ryan and I have spoken about getting Thy Art one day on a song. We've got so many other bands that we vibe with super hard and it's hard to pick just one. We've got some people we've been speaking to for future music but we'll keep that quiet for now

Do you have plans for a full length album in the near future?

An album is always the goal for us. We love the writing process and we've all collectively probably got a full length album worth of ideas we could release, especially Ryan and Josh. It's something that we are constantly talking about behind the scenes. We're all just waiting for the stars to align on that chapter of Roronoah, hopefully it'll be in the near future!

ree

If you could tour with any band, dead or alive, who would it be?

I think for a band, i would love to see us tour, with would be Chelsea grin or Thy Art Is Murder. There's about 20 more bands i could list but I'll keep it short and sweet

Is there any tour information/music release or general information you would like to share with the readers?

My only bit of parting information would be to stream "Accustomed To Hurt" when it releases. It's something we've put so much effort and time into and we're so stoked for everyone to bump it at full volume. You can also see us across the east coast starting August 1st so definetly check out our Instagram to see if we're hitting up your local spot!
