at just 16, Reece Mastin won the 2011 x factor competition. 2 platinum #1 albums. consecutive chart topping singles like 'Shout It Out', 'Good Night' and 'Rockstar' and a successful pop career under his belt. Reece has spent the last 5 years earning his place on the Aussie Rock circut.
i have been wanting to see Reece live ever since x factor so you can imagine how excited i was. the venue was gorgeous and so fun! lots of seating for us disabled folk and very accesible too. win! the real bonus was the carpets were not sticky! anyway... moving on to the show.

firstly, reece...now i dont know if it was just the show i went to but you gotta get some live support acts on the bill. with full respect to dj calicious, cause he was mixing some 2000s & 2010's bangers to fit the vibe! i just wish we had some live bands to hype up the crowd a bit more. i know a lot of local bands that would be honoured to support you. the night was very short lived with just one act. this is also me hinting to come back to newcastle cause i want to see you live again.
he opened up with my favourite single 'shut up and kiss me'. everyone was immedietly riled up and dancing. It was tough to get some videos cause everyone swarmed to the dancefloor. understandably so.
he covered some iconic songs like 'ufo' by sneaky sound system. 'i kissed a girl'. by katy perry and 'since you've been gone' by kelly clarkson with his own rock twist. reece has such a unique and universal voice that all the covers sounded like his own. i'm iffy with covers but these covers he did were amazing! he sounds insanely good live and had such great energy that kept the crows alive.
so fun fact, reece can scream....no like... screeeaam. i heard rumour that he's working on a metal album. though i could get time aside to personally ask, i put up a sign on a phone reading 'metal album when?' cause god damnit I NEED ANSWERS!!!!
to be fair, i was up the back, it's dark he probably had no idea what it said but we did get a little nod of appreciation. is that a yes? a no? mayb e?
future hayes here - reece posted on his stories of a song hes working on with some incredible screams so i think he's cooking up something for us!
so i went to this gig with a bunch of my metalhead friends. a few drinks later we're forming our own little mosh pit, two stepping and head banging to 'Good night' then the most magical thing happened. which makes me want a metal album even more.
'one more song'
'one more song'
'one more song'
this mf does a cover of 'welcome to the black parade' by my chemical romance.
i never ran so fast in my life. i pushed everyone out of my way cause i'm about to go feral.
i woke up the next day incredibly sore, blisters on my feet and a bucket list item checked off.

i hope reece is aware just how loved and appreciated he is in the punk, emo and metal scene. we all thought he was the coolest kid on the block and still do to this day. we welcome him with open arms and would love to hear him go to his emo roots and release something heavy. you know here at hot and heavy. we got your back on that, my friend!
you can find his upcoming shows here
this was such a fun gig. from start to finish, everybody was having fun and dancing. the crowd was amazing and well behaved and i am loving seeing reece continue to live his life like the rockstar he is!
i highly encourage you to go see him live. show your support.
who knows? we might whip together a little emo cover night with him as a special guest! what do you think?
