Melbourne’s very own heavy metal synth-pop trio Nightlight knows we ‘want that drama//drama’ in their latest single, DRAMA//DRAMA. Released November 6th DRAMA//DRAMA is an astonishingly good follow up from their earlier highly successful debut into a heavier sound with HEAVEN//BELOW.

DRAMA//DRAMA contains that familiar intoxicating mixture of genres that nightlight has already been using to carve a path of their own in the Australian heavy music scene. They’re a melting pot of k-pop flair, heavy metal intensity, and some other chaotic unexplainable thing that feels entirely of their own making.

The track has a booming 808 bass line that serves as a solid, all-consuming, foundation to the song's more experimental EDM style synth additions. Sonically, DRAMA//DRAMA is deliciously low, thundering and powerful. It feels perfectly suited to a writhing packed club dancefloor or flying down the highway in a car with a retro-fitted subwoofer rattling the window panes.

The heavy electronic drum beat and synth-bass sounds of Hayley Austen blend together magically. The synth-bass sometimes takes the stage with an atmospheric eerie quality of an organ, deep and haunting and beautiful. Together they create a perfect backdrop for the lighter synth soundscape that’s fleeting and captivating, feeding those amongst us with an appetite for frenetic, chaotic fun.

Additionally, Jordan Higgins’ drums are jaw-dropping. Fast, severely precise, and poignant, adding a flair to an already beat heavy mix that should feel suffocating but instead feels like taking flight. Nightlight are unafraid to take risks and that confidence shines through in DRAMA//DRAMA to excellent results.

Laura Lazzara’s vocals are sultry and smooth with an enticing apathetic tone that lures listeners through the track. She handles sweet playful harmonies and quick-fire rap verses with an appealing sly confidence. You can really hear the bands’ K-Pop sensibilities in her delivery, refined, layered, and delightful to listen to.

DRAMA//DRAMA’s lyrics speak to this intoxicating confidence. Lazzara speaks of writing the lyrics as an ‘exploration of domination and star power (with sexy undertones, whoops).’ She mentions the callback eagle-eared fans might hear to nightlight’s previously released track, ‘what if i’m the devil?’ with the lyric, ‘On another level, babe; I’m the devil, make it rain’.

‘Previously, my lyrics explored my personal battle of becoming unashamedly myself. In this new chapter, I’ve realised that if being the devil means being confident, self-assured and hot as fuck, then I’m the devil and so be it.’ Says Lazzara.

It’s a well-earned confidence and it shines through in DRAMA//DRAMA not just lyrically, but sonically too. It’s a song that could only be made by a group of people certain in their sound, their voice, and their message. DRAMA//DRAMA is an incredible addition to an already glittering discography that builds out nightlights' distinct and addictive sound.

Plus, it just sounds so fucking good.
