eora/Sydney metalcore band Heists have released "miles away", their final, and title track of EP "beneath the surface". "The record

melds intensity and vulnerability, pushing the
boundaries of modern metalcore while still carrying a sense of weight and grit. Across its tracks, the EP explores betrayal, sacrifice, survival and grief; offering a raw look at the different battles that lie beneath the surface of everyday life."
Guitarist Guy Vears shares: "We wanted to touch on struggles that we all face. Everyone has moments where they're carrying something heavy, and this EP was our way of exploring those feelings while reminding people they’re not alone in them."

miles away feels like a nostalgia bomb from the early 2000s in all of the best ways possible, with a modern and unique twist. the transitions between the clean and harsh vocals flow so effortlessly, never feeling harsh or janky. Chris's tone and phrasing throughout the track tickles my brain in the most pleasant ways. the subtle use of fry, almost slipping notice in places it is done so carefully, ties everything together making the experience smooth from the beginning all the way to the end. "you're miles away, sorry remains, it's killing, lost in the lonely sun".
this song blends crushing breakdowns, emotionally confronting lyrics, twisting melodies and tempo changes that will have you isolated in your own journey. "a disaster we

cannot deflect, a heavy hit right to the chest". This track does an excellent job of having you ride the wave of emotions as the song flows between the heavier and softer sections.
as I listened to this song on repeat i found myself focusing on the individual instruments throughout the track and found myself impressed at how heists have managed to fill every necessary space without making anything feel over done or leaving you wanting. miles away has found its way onto several of my playlists and I will not be admitting how many times I listened to this song after my notes were written. "am I the only one?"
Frontman Chris Zagas reflects:"This EP pushed us to grow more than anything we've done before. From writing, to recording, to taking it on stage, we've all grown in ways we didn't expect. The last year has been huge for us as a band and as people, and Beneath The Surface is the clearest snapshot of who we are right now."
heists will be touring this November with special guests outloved, signals and st. sinner.
