After their last track, ‘Synaesthesia’, dropped in October last year, Jollee is back ON with a new single, ‘Stir It Up’.
Bridging the gap between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Jollee was formed from a love of Amyl and the Sniffers and PJ Harvey in 2019. blendING the two distinct artists, THEY'RE A CLASSIC rock and roll band with a punk punch in a more modern form. The DYNAMIC band has shared the stage with acts ranging from Ali Barter to Sneaky Sound System.

Brooke Mowett’s rich vocals are striking, her vocal range diving from a formidable scream down to a gentle call, while their bass and guitar lines take on a bluesy rock tone. Their track, ‘Doorman’, even has a cowbell. (Though, it could have used a little more cowbell.)
‘Stir It Up’ opens with a tough grungy bass line, before turning up into a more classic rock groove. You’ll definitely be able to dance to this track. Mowett comes in with the lyrics, at first seeming to talk down with “you’re big, I’m small”, against a stripped back band. It is short lived, however, with the whole band diving into the pre chorus with “I can be tough too” in a powerful kick of defiance, shedding perceived weakness. Though the chorus is simply “stir it up”, it is catchy and will be stuck in your head for days. Jollee’s lyrical choices are empowering, encouraging you to take control, and Mowett’s soft singing builds up into a powerful belt that you can’t help but sing along too.

The drums are an instrument that really sticks out in this track. Baidon Howell doesn’t stick to the plain beat you’d find in some 80s rock and roll, but each verse is different. His constant changes are effective in adding dimension and keeping the song interesting. In the more stripped back parts, the bass drum is a driving force throughout, which adds punch to the verses.
The song rises with the chorus’, and dips across the verseS, Mowett’s building vocals with “keep the change you filthy animal” really bring the energy back up for the pre chorus. Of course, it wouldn’t be rock and roll with a wicked guitar solo, which really drives home the energy that is imbued in Jollee’s music. They bring us out in a boogie and gang vocals of “don’t you stir it up” before a shorter solo to intensely close out the song.

Jollee have brilliantly crafted ‘Stir It Up’, capsulating all of their sound and influence in one track, a testament to their talent as songwriters and musicians.
