It is my favourite time of the year. The one where I stressfully sat in a virtual waiting room to drop $600 on tickets to Dark Mofo events with 10,000+ other desperate people.
For those who don't know, Dark Mofo is a two week alternative festival held in the streets of Hobart, Tassie, every June. It show cases some of the best (and worst) of humanity through food, art, and music.
This is my breakdown of acts you can catch as a metal fan - a brief rundown of what you can expect if you haven't quite made a decision on who you would like to see.
chat pile - saturday 13th
Oklahoma's noise rock group, Chat Pile, will be an excellent watch. Crammed into the Altar Bar, they'll be sure to fill the room with anger and racket. If you want to be tossed about a crowded room and hyped up by your fellow punters, get the last tickets for their day show. evening show has sold out.
hymns to the dead - wednesday 17th
My favourite event every year. A collection of acts curated by Hobart's own Chalky. Usually packed to the brim with obscure black metal acts, you can read about imperial triumphant, hulder and more here. This year's line up is as follows
tiamat (sweden) - classic gothic metal lords. fans of paradise lost and my dying bride will find comfort in their doomy riffs.
negative plane (USA) - Orthodox black metal, with a thrashy touch. Often sounding distant and set back, they perfectly fit the despair ridden streets of hobart.
emasculator (CZECHIA/USA) - Slamming brutal death metal from the USA and Czechia. Fans of Algor MOrtis will love them.
grave upheaval (Aus) - Not available across major platforms, Grave upheaval's crushing death metal sound can't be missed.
power trip - thursday 18th
This will be your fix of thrash metal for the duration of the festival. Climbing the ranks of the music world, the dallas act will bring enthusiasm and energy to an otherwise gloomy time of year.
lord spikeheart - thursday 18th
This is a super exciting addition to the Dark Mofo lineup, leaning into the love of offbeat and less mainstream acts. Lord Spikeheart blends electronic elements through aggressive death metal vocals, and industrial noise. Incredibly unique and something you wouldn't want to miss.
blackwater holylight - saturday 20th
Heavy and dreamy is Blackwater HolyLight. The Psychedelic rock group fuses shoegaze and doom into their sound for a mix you can't refunse
this is england (film) - saturday 20th
Do yourself a favour and watch this film. And then watch this is england '86. Then '88. and then '90. witness Shaun push the boundaries of his own life by befriending a rough group of skinheads, and then have his beliefs and metal challenged again by them. it's beautiful and it's heartbreaking.
Still haven't made a decision? That's okay! Simply walking the streets of hobart, checking out the winter feast and swinging by the dark park will still feed your soul.
happy dark mofo season. get your tickets now.
