Oklahoma’s Ben Quad have teased their upcoming album Wisher with the (insanely catchy) first single from the EP, “It’s Just A Title”, via Pure Noise Records.
Ben Quad has also teamed up with director Alex Scalzo-Brown to cultivate a gorgeously upbeat new music video for the song “It’s Just A Title”.
“It’s Just A Title is about living with constant existential insecurity and questioning whether life now is any better than before,” explains Ben Quad’s guitarist Edgar Viveros.
“Musically, we drew inspiration from bands like All-American Rejects and Motion City Soundtrack, leaning into pop elements like heavy synths and a guitar solo. It was the first time we broke away from strict Midwest emo and punk structures, and it came together faster than anything we’ve written. For the video, we just wanted to have fun; silk robes, over-the-top vibes, and a tongue-in-cheek take on ‘suffering from success.”
Following the band’s successful self described "screamo" 2024 EP Ephemera, Wisher will be Ben Quad’s first full pro studio album and the band’s second LP to release after their debut I'm Scared That's All There Is (2022). However, Wisher will be their first LP with Pure Noise Records.
Ben Quad partnered up with producer Jon Markson [The Story So Far, Drug Church] to breathe life to the new album. Among the peaceful countryside and sweet barnyard animals, Wisher was brought to life at Markson’s farm/studio, a perfect setting to set the tone for the album in.
Contrasting with the band’s previous themes of survival and existentialism, the band have taken a different route with Wisher, opting for themes of hope and contentness, using their lyrics to remind us to savour the little things and life’s little victories - no matter how small.
“We really wanted to build a more positive outlook, a more hopeful tone,” Viveros says. “We’re still talking about love, loss – all the things that emo bands write about – but we wanted to spin it on its head and let people know that things can get better. Life is what you make it, and it’s important to grasp onto the little moments.”
“This is our love letter to the genre,” singer/guitarist Sam Wegrzynski expresses about the album. “It’s an amalgamation of all the sh*t emo kids like: screaming, synths, pop sensibilities all mixed with crazy emotional stuff. What’s post-emo if not the next evolution?”
