Swedish metal giants Sabaton are back, and they’ve gone full history nerd in the best way possible. Their brand new album Legends is finally out via Better Noise Music, and it’s exactly what the title promises: 11 tracks dedicated to 11 of history’s most legendary figures.

We’re talking Joan of Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte, Genghis Khan, Vlad the Impaler basically, if you made it into a textbook and had a sword or an empire, Sabaton probably wrote you an anthem.

Their latest single “I, Emperor” focuses on the rise and fall of Napoleon, the genius general who conquered Europe and then pushed his luck in Russia. It’s everything you want from a Sabaton track: bold, dramatic, and built to make you feel like you’re about to lead your own army into battle.

“It’s about hitting that ultimate peak and daring to burn bright, even if it means burning out,” says frontman Joakim Brodén. “Napoleon’s story is straight up legendary, and fans have been asking for this one for ages. We had to do it justice.”

And do it justice they did. The video for I, Emperor takes a fun twist, turning Napoleon’s final battle into a board game showdown between the band members themselves. Joakim plays as the French, facing off against the rest of the band as the British and Prussians. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say Joakim’s battle strategy changes history in the most Sabaton way possible.

Bass player Pär Sundström shared that fans practically willed this song into existence. “We’ve had so many requests for a Napoleon song,” he says. “It’s punchy, powerful, and it’s got that anthem energy. I can already see this one going off live.”

But Legends isn’t just about big riffs and bigger personalities, it’s Sabaton levelling up. For the first time, every member had a hand in writing the songs, bringing fresh energy and new ideas into the mix. The result is a record that sounds massive, cinematic, and unmistakably Sabaton, while still breaking new ground.

Across Legends, the band dives into stories that shaped humanity from Hannibal crossing the Alps to Miyamoto Musashi perfecting the art of the sword. Each song feels like its own short film, rich with detail, melody, and enough power metal drama to fuel an entire DnD campaign.
