Corners Of The Sky - Electrify Your Mind - Single Review

Grab a cup of tea (or ingest some other substances ;) ), close your eyes, and let your mind be electrified by Corners of the Sky’s Electrify Your Mind.

Electrify Your Mind is the titular track from the Kansas City psych rocker’s debut EP which was released in Feb of this year. The track is equal parts whimsical and energetic as the band promise “we’re gonna get you real high”- and oh, they do deliver!

The song opens with a droning hypnotic bassline, which serves as the heartbeat of the track, guiding listeners as they are grabbed by the hand and dragged through a vivid psychedelic soundscape.

Lead vocalist Jason Perez adds a unique texture to the song with hazily electrified vocals, further setting the energy and atmosphere for the remainder of the track. His tone perfectly accompanies the dynamic guitars and overall sound which is already so technically absorbing and stimulating right from the start.

The lyrics act as an omnipotent guide to listeners, almost shamanistic in their instructions. “Take another swig, why don’tcha?” he teases as the list of substances goes on. For a song about taking copious amounts of drugs, the overall vibe of the lyrics and song itself keep it from coming across as cliched; it’s fun, groovy and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

A little bit before halfway through the track is where the real magic happens- richly layered guitar melodies lure you into a beautifully trippy and lengthy guitar solo, accompanied by Jim Morrison-esque screams.

This is the part of the song that makes you want to flail around the room and shake your hair wildly as everything climaxes together. The atmosphere of chaos is enhanced as the track increasingly gets heavier with bashing drums and faster guitar rhythms, until it eventually comes down (much like an acid trip) and leads seamlessly into the next song on the EP The Tunnel.

It's the kind of song you would hear coming out of your friend’s garage as their cool older stoner brother is smoking with his friends.

Electrify Your Mind stands out as a high-energy kaleidoscope of sound. It manages to provide that feeling of unruly euphoria without having to partake in any substances.
